Seaford 23rd March

Well the planned trip to Seaford went ahead and we arrived at the beach around 7.30pm to find it completely empty and the sea lovely and flat.
We got set up and fired out 2 rods each, one with a fish bait on a large single hook, and the other rod with 2 or 3 small hooks and a mix of Lugworm, Squid and fish strips for bait.
First action came to Leigh with a triple shot (3 fish at once) consisting of 2 Whiting and a Rockling, then soon after I managed 2 Rockling for myself, which was handy as I needed one of those for my species list this year.
It then went quiet for a little while before Leigh had a positive bite on his long-range fish bait rod, and after a brief tussle he beached his first ever beach-caught Dogfish!
I was really pleased for him, and had to have a good look myself as I can't get enough of these little sharks. They're cool!
Leigh managed a Pouting next, and then a string of Rockling, nicely putting me to shame while I got my new multiplier reel in the worst bird's nest (Tangle) imaginable, and then discovered that my waders have a gaping great hole in them.
The way this was discovered was by me standing in the sea up to my knees, then when a freak wave came along I found myself up to my waist in water.
Not a concern as this happens fairly often in the Sea fishing game, but I then felt cold sea water filling up my left wader leg up to my knee!!
This left me in a bit of a huff, but after a calming can of Fosters and a rollie I got my act together and manged to catch another 4 Rockling.
After high water at midnight things got slower and slower until we packed up a little after 1.30am for the drive back to Crawley.
All in all we were pretty happy with the results as this is usually a difficult time of year, but we felt the area could definitely produce better in rougher conditions or after a big blow, so we'll be back for another go soon.

Next trip...

The session for this week will be another trip to the beach, this time Seaford which lies to the East of the port of Newhaven.
Local top angler Leigh Holman will be joining me on Friday 23rd for an evening session, with the high tide around midnight we'll probably fish from 7pm til around 1am and see what we can come up with.
I've never wet a line here before, but from reading up on forums etc it seems to be quite a prolific venue with an interesting mix of species to target, including my old favourite the Lesser Spotted Dogfish!
Although Cod have been increasingly scarce along our coasts this mark has a reputation for throwing up a few surprises so you never know...
I expect the mainstay of fish (If we catch ANY of course!) to be Rockling, Dabs, Whiting and the possibility of Bass, Dogfish and Sole.
Seeing as we've had quite a few surprises along the Sussex coast due to the ever changing climate, i'm definitely going to give fish baits a go, most likely the Herring that I have in the freezer after catching a few on my last trip.
Who knows, maybe we'll see a monster? Or maybe we'll blank!
But that 's always half the fun...

Worthing Pier, last minute session

Thought i'd pop along for my first shot at this mark, arrived at 6pm and fished til 9pm.
There was a fairly nice Flounder caught around 1/3 of the way along on the left as I arrived, and I headed for the far end down on the extension.
With a nice bag of frozen Herring and Squid and a few frozen black Lugworm I was hoping for the first Doggie of the year, or maybe a freak Ray...
Pretty optimistic considering, but he who dares and all that! Not to mention tomorrow being the first of 4 x 12hr shifts back at the airport.
Pretty much every cast resulted in hooks stripped clean of bait (No doubt thanks to our sideways-walking chums) , and I was very surprised to find how shallow it is off the end there, even at HW. Comfortable place to fish though.
The end result?

COMING SOON!

The finishing touches are being appiled to my new Blog and I hope to have it up and running by the end of the week.
Your weekly number one stop for all things angling in our region!
In the meantime if anyone has somewhere they'd like to go and get in a session for a feature then contact me and we'll sort it out.
Tight Lines.
